What is Coaching ?
In my words, coaching is a process which enables clients to learn to understand themselves & learn to help themselves to move to their desired state of living life.
You are currently at a certain state in life. It is typically a combination of mental, emotional, physical, financial, professional, personal states. Your own body, career, relationships, experience influence these states. You have your own preferences, skills, beliefs, mission that drive your behaviour.
You probably know some of these elements about yourself to some degree, while others may be unexplored or unknown to you.
Most of us have a fuzzy idea of where we are at, where we want to go, what actions we’re taking and what actions should be taken. We live life based on this understanding of ourselves.
Life’s satisfaction can increase if the current state, desired state and the path are more clearer and more aligned with your inner self. The greater the alignment, the smoother life becomes.
As an example, in some cases, when we are not able to take the actions (changing habits, making decisions), it could be due to mis-alignment with the desired state the action is supposed to take us to.
As you live life, do you feel there is some mis-alignment in what life state you should be at but are not ? Or what life state you desire to be in but are not ? Or what actions should you take to be at the desired life state ?
If yes, coaching is a tool that can help to drive alignment in your life.
The coaching process is a self discovery and a self empowerment process that enables you to discover your current state and the desired state of life and then move towards the desired state.
The interesting part is the coach doesn’t need to know your entire life nor analyze every little detail. You already know that . The coach’s job is to show you the process and power of self discovery. Once you experience the process and realise the power, you can then also learn to apply the process in your life regularly.
To have an effective coaching engagement, start with identifying one very important life area you want to improve. It could be an actual goal related to health, career, etc. Or you might choose to improve a particular relationship or improve your leadership qualities. Or it could be about achieving a better balance and fulfillment in day to day life.
Choose an area that is very important to you and you’ve already tried to improve but couldn’t to the required degree. As you go through the coaching process, you will realise that properly improving one important area, greatly improves other important areas of life too.
The work needed from you is to be true to yourself, be open to learning new things about you and take actions from these learnings. As you probably know, this is harder to do than it appears. The coach’s job is to help in making it easier.
